Fence staining · North Bay, Ontario

Cedar, pressure-treated, and cottage fence staining since 2016.

Fence staining in North Bay typically costs $1.50 to $4 per square foot of one-side fence area — roughly $900 to $2,400 for a standard 100-foot by 6-foot privacy fence. North Bay Painting Services pressure-washes the line, masks plants and landscaping, replaces rotted or loose pickets through our carpentry partner, and brushes on one to two coats of Benjamin Moore Arborcoat (primary) or Dulux fence stain across a 45-mile radius from North Bay — including Callander, Corbeil, Sturgeon Falls, Powassan, South River, and Mattawa. We are cottage-country specialists with deep Lake Nipissing experience: humidity-rated mildewcide-treated stains for lakefront privacy fences, pet- and family-friendly low-VOC formulations, and brushed-on application (not just sprayed) so the stain actually penetrates the wood. Every fence job is fully bonded, insured, and WSIB covered, backed by a 1-year written workmanship warranty. Owned and operated by Ahmed Khalil, owner and lead painter, who personally walks every cottage and rural fence line.

What's included

Every fence job. Every time. The difference is the prep and the brush.

Fences are vertical, linear, and full of cut-in surface — pickets, post caps, lattice tops. The shortcut is to spray it and walk away. The right way is to pressure-wash, mask, brush on the stain, and back-roll it into the grain. We do it the right way on every job.

01

Walk the line

We walk every linear foot of your fence with you. Identify rotted or loose pickets, leaning posts, and split rails. Carpentry add-on flagged in writing.

02

Plant + landscape masking

Drop cloths and poly over flower beds, mulch, hedges, and landscape stone. Stain doesn't land where it shouldn't — your perennials are safe.

03

Pressure-wash prep

A controlled pressure-wash removes dirt, mildew, algae, and grayed wood fibers — fence prep only. We don't offer pressure washing as a standalone service.

04

Brightener if needed

Oxalic-acid wood brightener neutralizes greyed, weathered cedar and pressure-treated pine, restoring pH so Arborcoat or Dulux fence stain bonds properly.

05

Picket replacement

Rotten or loose pickets get replaced through our carpentry trade partner before stain. Matched to your existing material — cedar or pressure-treated.

06

Brush + back-roll

Brushed on, not just sprayed. Stain has to penetrate vertical grain to last on linear fence surfaces — back-rolling forces it into the wood.

07

One to two coats Arborcoat

Benjamin Moore Arborcoat semi-transparent, solid, or translucent. Dulux fence stain on commercial yard fences. Two coats on bare or solid systems.

08

1-year written warranty

Premature peeling, lifting, or blistering of our application — we come back and fix it. Written, signed, on every quote.

Fences we stain

Every fence type, every wood, every property.

Cedar through pressure-treated pine, residential perimeter through rural property line. We match the right Arborcoat or Dulux system to the wood, the exposure, and the look you want — and we brush it on, not just spray.

Residential perimeter

Backyard privacy fences, side-yard runs, gates. Cedar, pressure-treated pine, board-on-board. Stained one or both sides depending on access.

Cottage privacy fences

Lake Nipissing, Trout Lake, Lake Nosbonsing, Callander Bay. Mildewcide-treated Arborcoat for lake humidity. Cottage waterfront privacy systems.

Rural property line

Long-run perimeter fences in Chisholm Township, Bonfield, Powassan. Split rail, board fence, post-and-rail. Solid stain for visibility from the road.

Pool surrounds

Backyard pool privacy fences and gate systems. Pet- and family-friendly low-VOC Arborcoat. Sealed against splash and chlorine.

Picket + shadowbox

Cedar pickets, alternating shadowbox, scalloped tops. More cut-in than solid board — we hand-brush every face for full coverage.

Board-on-board + horizontal

Board-on-board privacy fences and modern horizontal slat designs. Stained both faces if access permits, with extra attention to the gap between boards.

Kennel + dog-run

Pet-safe, low-VOC Arborcoat formulations on dog-run fencing and kennel surrounds. Cured before pets are returned to the yard.

Commercial yard fences

Storage yards, equipment compounds, light commercial perimeters in North Bay. Dulux solid stain on most commercial work for cost-effective coverage.

Stain products

Benjamin Moore Arborcoat. Dulux. Built for Northern fences.

We specify by wood type, exposure, and the look you want — not by price. You see exactly which Arborcoat or Dulux product is going on which fence before the first coat. Both lines are water-based; for very old, very dry wood we'll discuss oil alternatives during the walkthrough.

Benjamin Moore Arborcoat
Our primary fence stain line

Arborcoat is the gold standard for cedar and pressure-treated pine fences in Northern Ontario's freeze-thaw climate. Water-based, low-VOC, pet- and family-friendly. Available in semi-transparent, semi-solid, solid, and translucent — we specify based on grain visibility and recoat preference.

  • Arborcoat Semi-Transparent — best for newer cedar, shows grain, easy 3 to 5 year recoat
  • Arborcoat Solid — best for old, blotchy, or pressure-treated, 5 to 7 year cycle
  • Arborcoat Translucent — light-tinted UV protection for new cedar fences
  • Mildewcide additive — added on lakefront and shaded north-side fences
Dulux
Our secondary fence line

Dulux is our second specification line — used on commercial yard fences, rental properties, rural perimeters, and projects where the homeowner has a Dulux colour locked in. Good Northern Ontario performance, easy local sourcing in North Bay.

  • Dulux Solid Fence Stain — opaque coverage for older fences and pressure-treated
  • Dulux Semi-Transparent — grain-showing finish for newer cedar fences
  • Wood brightener + cleaner — prep chemistry that pairs cleanly with stain
  • Oil alternative (on request) — for very old or very dry pressure-treated where deep penetration is the priority

"
Our cedar privacy fence was grey and patchy after 8 years. Ahmed's crew pressure-washed, brightened, replaced two rotted pickets, and brushed on Arborcoat semi-transparent. The whole back yard looks new — and they masked every flower bed perfectly.

Cottage on Lake Nipissing — 180 feet of board-on-board privacy fence facing the water. Ahmed walked the whole line, recommended a mildewcide-treated Arborcoat solid because of the lake humidity. Two seasons in and there's no grey blooming or peeling at all.

Pressure-treated dog-run fence in Powassan, low-VOC because of the dogs. Crew flagged a leaning corner post in the quote, fixed it through their carpentry partner, then put down two coats of Arborcoat solid. Dogs were back in the yard the next day.

How much does fence staining cost in North Bay?

Fence staining in North Bay typically costs $1.50 to $4 per square foot of one-side fence area, depending on style, condition, and stain type. A standard 100-foot by 6-foot residential privacy fence runs $900 to $2,400 stained on one side, and roughly 1.6 to 1.8 times that to stain both sides. Picket and shadowbox styles cost more per linear foot than solid board-on-board because there's more cut-in surface to brush. Older greyed cedar that needs a brightener and replacement pickets adds 15 to 25 percent. Every fence quote includes a pressure-wash prep step, plant and landscape masking, brushed-on application of one to two coats of Benjamin Moore Arborcoat or Dulux fence stain, and a 1-year written workmanship warranty.

Should I stain or paint my fence?

For almost every wood fence in North Bay we recommend stain over paint. Stain penetrates the wood and weathers gracefully — when it's time to recoat, you wash and reapply without scraping. Paint sits on the surface and cracks, peels, and flakes off the south- and west-facing pickets within 3 to 5 years, and once paint starts failing on a fence the only honest fix is to strip it and start over. The exception is a fence that was painted years ago and the owner doesn't want the cost of a strip — in that case we use Benjamin Moore Arborcoat solid stain, which reads almost like paint but bonds and weathers more like a stain. Cedar, pressure-treated pine, board-on-board, and shadowbox fences should all be stained, not painted.

How long does fence staining take?

A standard 100-foot residential privacy fence takes 1 to 2 working days. A 200- to 300-foot rural perimeter fence takes 3 to 5 working days. The schedule breaks down as roughly: half a day to walk the line, mask plants and landscape, and pressure-wash; 48 to 72 hours of dry time before stain (we will not stain wet wood); 1 day for the first coat of Benjamin Moore Arborcoat or Dulux applied by brush and back-rolled; and a final pass on missed spots, gates, and post caps. We need 24 to 48 hours of dry weather above 10 Celsius for the stain to cure properly. We also flag any rotted or loose pickets in writing before we start so the carpentry add-on can be sequenced before the stain coat.

What is the best stain for a pressure-treated fence?

For new pressure-treated pine fences, we wait 6 to 12 months before staining so the wood can dry out and the surface tannins can leach. After that window, the best stain for a pressure-treated fence in Northern Ontario is Benjamin Moore Arborcoat semi-transparent or solid, depending on whether you want the grain to show. For older, blotchy, weather-grey pressure-treated pine we go straight to Arborcoat solid because the grain is no longer attractive and the solid hides the inconsistency. Dulux is our secondary line — used on commercial yard fences and budget-conscious residential projects, with good performance and easy local sourcing in North Bay. We use water-based Arborcoat or Dulux on almost every job; oil-based stain is reserved for very old, very dry wood where deep penetration is the priority.

How long will the stain last on a fence?

Fence stain generally lasts longer than deck stain because vertical surfaces don't take foot traffic, snow load, or standing water. Semi-transparent stain on a properly prepped cedar or pressure-treated fence lasts 3 to 5 years before a maintenance coat is needed. Solid stain on the same fence lasts 5 to 7 years. South- and west-facing fence faces wear faster than north and east faces because of UV exposure — it's not unusual for the sunny side to need a refresh a year or two before the shaded side. Cottage and lakefront fences along Lake Nipissing get a mildewcide-treated Arborcoat formula because of the humidity, and we plan a maintenance walk-through every 2 to 3 years on lake-adjacent fences. Our 1-year written workmanship warranty covers premature peeling, lifting, or blistering of our application — caused by the way we put the stain on — for the first year after the work is completed.
