Vinyl wallpaper

Two-layer construction. We peel-strip the vinyl top layer first, then soak and scrape the paper backer. Cleanest type to remove.

Paper wallpaper

Single-layer paper from the 1970s and 1980s. Score the surface, soak with hot water and remover solution, scrape with a broad knife.

Vinyl-coated paper

Plastic-faced paper that resists water. We perforate aggressively first so the remover solution can penetrate the paper backing.

Painted-over wallpaper

The toughest job we do. Paint film seals the paper - we steam, score, steam again, and run repeated soak cycles. Adds 30–50% to scope.

Wallpaper borders

Usually self-adhesive. We heat the border with a hair dryer or heat gun and peel with a broad knife. Often a same-day project.

How long does wallpaper removal take?

A standard 12×12 single-layer room takes one full working day to score, soak, scrape, wash, skim-coat, and prime. A whole-floor wallpaper removal across 4 to 6 rooms typically takes 3 to 6 working days depending on the wallpaper type, the substrate, and how much drywall repair is needed. Painted-over wallpaper, multiple layers, or hallways with stacked papered layers can stretch a single room to two days. Will my drywall be damaged after the paper comes off?

Some level of drywall paper tearing is normal on virtually every wallpaper removal job - especially if the original installer skipped a primer-sealer before hanging the paper. Our scope assumes light-to-moderate drywall paper damage and includes a skim coat (one to two passes) plus sanding before primer. If we hit heavy gouges, full delamination, or a wall that needs new drywall, we stop, photograph the damage, and give you a written change-order before doing extra work. The final wall is sanded smooth, washed clean of paste residue with TSP, and sealed with a stain-blocking primer so the topcoat goes on a stable, neutral surface. After two coats of Benjamin Moore or Dulux, you cannot tell wallpaper was ever there.
