Lake Nipissing west-end humidity
Sturgeon Falls sits at the mouth of the Sturgeon River on the west end of Lake Nipissing, and the prevailing summer winds push warm, humid air right off the open water onto homes from the boardwalk through to the rural lakefront stretches. That kind of sustained moisture exposure is why we specify mildewcide-treated exterior stains on cedar shake, log siding, and pressure-treated decks anywhere within a couple of hundred metres of the lake, and why we lean on breathable acrylic exterior paints that let trapped moisture escape rather than blistering the film off the siding two summers later. We don't just throw a generic exterior paint at a lakefront house - the system is built for the exposure.
Older 1960s–80s homes in town
Most homes inside the town of Sturgeon Falls were built between the 1960s and the 1980s - solid post-war stock with plaster or older drywall, single-pane window trim, and on the older end of the range, pre-1990 builds where lead paint considerations apply. We test before we sand, contain dust, and switch to wet-sanding or chemical strippers where lead is present. Plaster repair, hairline crack chasing, and skim coats over old textured walls are routine on these jobs - we'd rather spend a half-day on prep than have to come back under warranty on a wall that wasn't ready for paint.
Newer subdivisions on the east end
The east end of Sturgeon Falls has filled in with newer subdivisions over the last 15 years - vinyl and fibre cement siding, pre-primed engineered trim, modern drywall. These jobs move faster on prep but still need the right paint system: a flexible 100% acrylic exterior on fibre cement, vinyl-safe exterior colours that won't warp the siding under summer sun, and modern low-VOC interior lines like Benjamin Moore Natura or Dulux Lifemaster for families with young kids.
Cottage market on the west shore
A big chunk of our Sturgeon Falls work is seasonal cottage and year-round lakefront homes on the west shore of Lake Nipissing. That work has its own rhythm - short Northern Ontario exterior season (late May through mid-September), absentee owners who need daily photo updates, key handoffs and lockup logistics, and access roads that might not see a grader between visits. We coordinate it the way you'd want it coordinated if it were your cottage: one point of contact, scheduled around your arrival weekends, and a written walkthrough at sign-off.
